The 1989 Japanese motorbike Grand Prix was the first round of the 1989 Grand Prix motorbike racing season. It took place on the weekend of 24 to 26 March 1989 at the Suzuka Circuit.

Ezio Gianola knew how to make the best of it, riding the Honda 125 as nobody else could. The first success dated 1989 was historic, as it was obtained at Suzuka, in the face of the Japanese leadership who would have wished for a victory by a compatriot. Ezio was the first Italian to win a Grand Prix in the land of the Rising Sun and was in contention for the World Championship of the eight-litre two-stroke, competing against JJ Cobas, Derbi, Aprilia and the 'colleagues' NS 125s put on the track by the House of the Golden Wing.
